So, what makes a handbag so precious to a woman?
For a woman, a handbag is a highly emotive possession that is rooted in her very psyche. It really is an extension of herself. Like many people, the first handbag I remember is my mother’s. I can still smell the beige suede lining, infused with boiled sweets and cologne.
My first ‘grown-up’ bag was an antique needlepoint purse, swinging on a fine chain, bought on Portobello Road. I was hooked. From then on, I have studied handbags not only as covetable arm candy that create a rush of endorphins, but as beacons of social change, barometers of style and of course, practical necessities.
